ToggleA Homebuilder in Nashville, TN, built multiple homes near CMHF Downtown, leading to multiple asphalt trenches in the street from installing new water taps. Furthermore, since these trenches were within 10 feet of one another, NDOT requires you to combine them to make one topping.
Every project has its own set of unplanned adversities, and this one was no different.
Gaddes Strtategic was hired to complete an asphalt paving mill and resurfacing project. As we were milling the metro street down 2 inches, the strategic partner milling company we used for this project noticed that the trenches were filled with hot asphalt instead of the traditional temporary cold patch. This changed the spec slightly because we had to do the asphalt trench repair of the multiple trenches before we milled and resurfaced the top two inches.

The Challenge: Creating Durable Asphalt Paving for Nashville Metro Streets
The challenge was to create a durable, smooth surface that included over-engineered asphalt trench repair to multiple trenches, milling and resurfacing. Given that it is a Nashville metro street, the surface needed to be resilient and long-lasting while maintaining an attractive appearance.
The Solution: Implementing Asphalt Trench Repair with Mill and Resurfacing
Gaddes Strategic, LLC, under the management of owner Shane Gaddes, stepped up to meet the challenge. After milling the to two inches of the street, revealed two trenches that didn’t have a permanent trench patch, the two were filled with gravel. The team dug out 11 inches of 57 gravel stone in the two trenches and replace both with 9 inches of binder. Then paved 34×70 two inches.
What are the benefits of asphalt paving?
The dark hue of asphalt minimizes glare, accelerates the melting of snow and ice, and renders clearer lane markings. The rapid implementing of asphalt roads permits for shorter construction interruptions, workers can “complete the job efficiently”, and this drastically cuts down on safety hazards for those on the road. Asphalt has a pliable surface.
What is Milling and Resurfacing?
In the most basic terms, milling and resurfacing entails taking off and substituting the highest layer of your asphalt. The underlying asphalt layer remains untouched but still gives structural reconditioning and a “new asphalt” appearance at a fraction of the price of a full replacement.
What are the Benefits of Asphalt Milling?
Smoothed and evened-out roadways
- Levels the roadway to provide a consistent form in both the horizontal and vertical direction (Roughness and undulations are removed).
- Reestablishes water run-off and provides a textured layer for friction management
- Reconstructs the border-display for streets and parking lots that have been heavily paved over
Quick and efficient
- Maintains the majority of existing traffic conditions with limited disruption (The majority of situations allow for the regular flow of traffic to be sustained while also allowing for traveling on the road surface soon after milling is complete.)
- Depending on the depth of cutting, some large milling machines can be very economically efficient for broader projects such as roads, airstrips, and expansive parking lots, able to cut around 13,000 sq. meters per day at a rate of 75 ft. per minute.
A Profitable and Environmentally Friendly Practice
- The RAP produced from this process can serve as a substitute for an aggregate in fresh asphalt, which makes it a beneficial asset with great financial worth.
Environmentally conscious
- The production yields no fire or smoke and the slight amount of debris is simply managed
- Salvaged resources can be kept and utilized again, allowing for a more eco-friendly atmosphere.
What are the benefits of asphalt resurfacing?
Enhance security measures -Continuous use of asphalt roads can create a hazardous environment for both walkers and drivers due to the buildup of wear and tear, resulting in rough patches or ruts on the surface. Pedestrians can be prone to slips and trips due to a rough surface, while fissures, potholes, and deep crevices can reduce grip on the ground and make it difficult for vehicles to remain stable. To reduce the threats associated with traveling or trekking on a dilapidated driveway or car park, resurface the area. Applying a new asphalt layer will help cover and plug any hole or fissure on the ground to decrease potential perils.
Improve visibility – Asphalt may turn into unappealing colors with subjection to extreme elements. Additionally, car liquids such as oils possess chemicals that can cause discoloration on the exterior. Decaying, marked, or faded asphalt is unappealing and affects the general look of your place. Have a resurfacing venture to give a new impression to your obsolete asphalt exterior. Asphalt resurfacing will eliminate any breaks, potholes, spots, or blurring to present an up-to-date appearance. By revamping the residence’s entryway, the house’s overall exterior appeal is enhanced.
Avoid excessive coating – Applying a sealcoat is essential for ensuring the longevity of an asphalt surface. The coating is a barrier to prevent oxidation and water infiltration deterioration, enhances grip, and guards against gas and oil contamination. Although asphalt sealcoating is advantageous, excess application of it can be detrimental. Sealing will be fruitless and may cause extensive splitting if holes, indentions, or other destruction are present in the pavement. You can utilize a sealcoat for extra safeguarding by laying a fresh layer of asphalt. The sealcoat should have successful results and meet your expectations.
Extending Longevity – Although a tarmac parking lot may persist for several years, its utilization duration relies heavily on the quality of its composition, production, upkeep, and attention. If you fail to address fissures, craters, disintegrating edges, deep grooves, and hollows when they appear, the life expectancy of your driveway will drastically decrease.
Asphalt resurfacing is key to maintaining your asphalt layer in ideal condition for a prolonged period. This will help take care of most issues with asphalt and prevent further harm. This action will prevent you from paying for installing a new driveway or parking lot too soon.
Cut costs – If a paved road deteriorates, it must be entirely replaced. Installing a new asphalt surface can be costly. Consequently, resurfacing needs fewer machines, substances, and employees, decreasing total expenditure. Therefore, if you refurbish your asphalt when necessary, you’ll decrease the cost of installing it and the time it takes.
